Braulio

Braulio-rabia-del-sur-comic

Braulio is a businessman with his fingers in many pies. He has links with the world of bullfighting and a loyal henchman, Leo, who, in 2005, controls Braulio's shady dealings, first on the streets of Málaga but later at headier levels. Thanks to Desi, one of Braulio's businesses interests is Neoprotalia, a biochemical company based in the Andalusian Technology Park, the PTA, located not far from the city.

This company is researching possible applications of the prototypes B1-α y B1-β. With Leo's help, Braulio launches B1-α on the illegal drugs market. After only a few years, Reblax, the front they use for its production, becomes big business.

  • Leo is Málaga low life. He works for Braulio, cleaning up any dirty business that needs taking care of, which even includes rescuing the Head of Malaga's Business Promotion and Employment Department, Desi Aranda, from Thailand. Leo is a streetwise extortioner with a violent streak who is equally at home on the streets or hanging round the corridors of power. He may be the loyal piper who plays the tune, but there is not a servile bone in his body.

  • Sandra is the physically stunning woman who Andy comes across in an alley after she has been beaten up. He takes her to A&E and visits her during her recovery. After leaving hospital, Sandra asks Andy to look after her for a few days, but soon she has moved in and is pregnant with his child. The turbulence of their relationship owes much to the fact that Sandra is a brassy party animal with a taste for the wild side, who just can't get through life without a little something extra.

  • Andrés, Andy to his friends, is a young banderillero and aspiring bullfighter who is the complete opposite of his brother, Leo. Leo respects Andy for his innocent and honourable character, and has blind faith that his brother will escape the social dregs they were both born into by becoming a success in the bullring. A chance encounter brings Andy and Sandra together; she is an older woman with a mysterious past who he rescues from a brutal beating and takes to hospital.

  • Desi is Head of Business Promotion and Employment in Málaga's City Hall. In 2012 he reaps the full extent of what he has sown in years of unbridled, uncontested power. He has consistently given preferential treatment to Braulio, a businessman with shares in countless companies that owe their existence, funding or promotion to Desi's good will.

  • Beaker is in charge of B1-α y B1-β research at Neoprotalia. A victim of Leo's extortion, he is forced to supply B1-α and keep Leo informed about the dose that should be administered as the range of users (first animals and later, humans) increases. Later he will have to run a clandestine laboratory that appears to be a completely legal undertaking.

Lately, reality has given us food for thought [...]. The reality of recent years has been terrible, and it’s getting worse. While we were developing the project what was happening fitted like a glove. What’s been happening is sordid. What’s happening is very sordid.

Málaga is not represented in the world of the graphic novel. If you tell a dark story it has to be in New York, Chicago, maybe Barcelona, el Rabal or film noir Paris. And we said, why not do something from here? It seems that everybody thinks that everything that’s dark comes from outside and we live in the perfect setting. Even if you go to a village with a population of 1,500, you’re going to see corruption: the depraved, the femme fatalle, the drug dealer, the thief, the corrupt politician and good people as well, but we aren’t here to tell stories about princesses and frogs.

The Technology Park presents an idealised image of Málaga thanks to the omnipotent Europe of some years ago, which allowed unsustainable companies to open, and today it’s scary to go there [...] business at the PTA (Technology Park of Andalusia) was based on money that came from the EU when Europe supported projects so that they would flourish. This situation really existed: there have been companies that took money for unsustainable projects and ultimately failed. Even so, that entire infrastructure was created, and now it’s like a ghost town.

We had a comment from a woman who said we were violent and not politically correct with women [...]. The truth is that the initial image was of a gunshot through the spyhole of a door, with a woman on the other side. Buñuel cut open an eye, we shot through a spyhole.

If you don’t like a cascade of blood, well, then don’t visit he web. When you see the political situation, doesn’t it piss you off the same way? When you want to give a wake up call, anything goes. We wanted to tell a harsh story, but the filth just reflected what was happening when I wrote the story.
